An ambient meta-festival card collecting game designed for the Carnegie Mellon Entertainment Technology Center’s Building Virtual Worlds (BVW) Fall 2013 Festival.
81 Monsters is many things: It is a deck of cards with monsterised representation of all of the cohort’s students, and guests are encouraged to collect them all by playing through as many BVW worlds as they can; it is a digital world where guests can scan their monsters to see them animated in a bin, and where they strive to collect the most monsters on a leaderboard; it is a way for guests to get to know the students of our cohort better; and it is also a yearbook for all of this year’s BVW students to commemorate the end of what is often a traditionally exhausting and emotional experience.
Building Virtual Worlds forms a core component of immersion semester at the Carnegie Mellon’s Master’s of Entertainment program, where students are randomly matched in small groups to rapidly prototype games and experiences over 5 rounds. It is not uncommon for students to finish the semester on a bittersweet note.
For this project, David produced, helped with the experience design, and drew all 81 monsters.
